SWIMMING: THE PERFECT FITNESS ACTIVITY

Swimming can be great exercise for the whole body. Almost anyone can enjoy it, regardless of size or physical condition. But water safety is paramount in its importance. Always swim with a buddy, and swim where a lifeguard is present. Here are some places in our area to swim and/or take lessons.

Bainbridge Island:

Ray Williamson Pool, Madison & High School Roads, (260) 842-2302

Bremerton:

Glenn Jarstad Aquatic Center, 50 Magnuson Way, (360) 478-5376. Very large pool, birthday party area, slides. Heavily chlorinated. Lifeguard was less than friendly (dare I say "power hungry tyrant"?) on our last visit.

NAVSTA Bremerton Concourse West, (360) 476-9476. Military ID required. This is where we usually swim. Too much chlorine in the water, but it's safe, not crowded, and most of the lifeguards are great. Pool toys, a jacuzzi for the adults, and a family changing room are all great plusses.

Olympic Aquatic Center, 7070 Stampede Blvd, (360) 692-3192

Port Orchard:

South Kitsap (High School) Pool, 425 Mitchell, (360) 876-7385.

Poulsbo:

North Kitsap Community Pool, 1881 NE Hostmark Street, (360) 779-3790

Silverdale:

SUBASE Bangor, (360) 535-5941. Must have valid military ID, plus picture ID for all occupants of vehicle. Separate high dive pool. Larger pool than PSNS. Only drawback is that there's no family dressing room, and boys 10 or older must use the men's dressing room alone, ("Mom, there were some really immodest men in there!" ~Elisha :-O) and they won't let them get in any other way.

Do you have experience with one or more of these facilities? We'd love to hear from you.

Swimming Resources:

Lillies of the Field: Modest swimsuits for those of you tired of the high cut legs and low cut tops.

Water Safety for your school-aged child: From the American Academy of Pediatrics.
