Scrapbooking

SESSION ONE: Basic Scrapbooking

We began by opening in prayer, and discussing why history matters. We read aloud the Scrapbooking page from the KAH handbook. We discussed what acid-free and lignin-free are, and why they are important terms. We had taken pictures of our KOF breadmaking sessions specifically to use for scrapbooking, and we sorted these by who was in each picture. Then we explained the importance of cropping a picture to create a desired focal point. The example we used had one of the Keepers surrounded by bookshelves and an open door. It had been cropped down to just the child and then matted on a background the same color as her dress. It was a good visual example and the children all seemed to grasp the difference and the reasoning behind it. We used an example of the same picture matted on two different colored backgrounds, and let them see how each color took the eye to a different place. Then we turned them loose! We had different solid colored papers and stickers and scissors available, and allowed each of them to create something that was completely theirs. Accordingly, some were very simple and others were magnificient pieces of art! Our point was to make certain the books are THEIRS. They then decorated the outsides of their scrapbooks at will.

SESSION TWO: Pocket Pages

Pocket pages are great for those things you don't want to take up a whole page, yet you still want to keep. Things like certificates, birthday cards, ticket stubs, souvenir folders and other paper goods. It was a good choice for us since many of our club members had entered the
county fair and taken home ribbons and awards. For this session, we had a selection of printed papers. We discussed using the proper background, and how different papers would tell a different story and give a different "slant" to the page. We made simple pocket pages
by cutting a semi-circle out of a top page and gluing three sides of it to the bottom page. The children then decorated the top page, and put their memorabilia between the top and bottom sheets, then slid it into the page protector.

We will likely revisit this topic next year and progress to more advanced layouts. In the mean time, we plan to have one Scrap Night every month. This is an especially good project for us as homeschoolers because it provides a visual record of projects done throughout the year.
