CARMEL MISSION BASILICA:
CALIFORNIA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL MISSION

The history of California is a fascinating one, from before its gold rush to its modern day multi-cultural composition. Part of this state's great past lies in its missions. Founded in 1770, the local Carmel Mission is the second oldest mission in California. It's widely known as the most beautiful of the California missions, and that title is well deserved.

Highlights:
Paul says:
"Of course we later found out we'd done the self-guided tour BACKWARD, but it ended up better for us. The first thing we saw was the scale model of the mission. Elisha, 5, has a real interest in building things and spent a considerable time exploring the model. I liked looking at the layout of the mission, and the accommodations of the various rooms. Seeing his room, it's obvious that Junipero Serra must have taken a vow of poverty to concentrate more on building up the mission for others."
Julie adds: "The main sanctuary is solemn in a reflective way. I couldn't help but wonder what the people were like who sat there 200 years ago. How very different and yet how very much the same they must have been. Many of their graves are just outside of the church. It was very interesting to walk among the rows and speculate about those buried there, from dignitaries of the day to the Indians who provided much of the labor for the mission."

Other things not to be missed include:

·The art throughout the mission. There are some beautiful paintings representing various aspects of American and church history hanging on the walls. Likewise, the various statues and sculptures are beautiful pieces of art.
·Jenna asked, "Can I get married here someday?" about the courtyard. It's just gorgeous, with flowers, fountains, various statues and more. It does look like the perfect place for a wedding. There's also plenty of space for the children to explore on their own and make discoveries. David, 7, especially liked the large fountain in the middle and enjoyed landing his coins on the top of the "wishing well."
·Whoever tends the gardens must be a master horticulturist. What a joy to sit there amongst such beauty! The main garden on its own is reason enough to visit.

Education: Every student in California must study California history. I can think of no better way to introduce it than a visit to a California Mission. The difference between reading about it and actual sitting there is a huge chasm of understanding and empathy with those who have gone before us. These missions live on today as churches, museums, and hosts of many cultural events . You might want to pick up an age-appropriate book on the Missions from your local library before going. That will give you enough background to fully appreciate it.

Hint: Explain "respectful silence" is BEFORE you enter the main sanctuary :. Voices need to be kept at a minimum, a gentle demeanor maintained, remembering that it is a place of worship.

Kid Safety Considerations: Make certain your children stay on the path in the graveyard area. The area off the trail is not a shortcut and not meant for foot traffic.
