MUSEUMS AND OTHER DISCOUNTS

Don't you just love a good afternoon at a museum or other educational venue? Especially if it's hands on! Museums can open up a world into the past, the future, or a different culture. They stretch children's imaginations and exercise their brains. It would be nice if every museum was free to homeschoolers *s*. There are a lot of ways to save money, though. Here are a few ways to help.
Free Admission
A lot of museums and attractions in the area offer free days. They aren't usually homeschool-specific, and are generally crowded, but if you're on a budget, they are definitely worth it. If your budget isn't tight, consider paying for a membership or full-price admission, especially for the smaller venues.

Keyport - Keyport Naval Undersea Musuem. Always free. This is an interesting short trip, but it's MUCH better on Discover-E Days where the children get to try out many engineering and science experiments under the tutelage of Keyport employees. You can also call and set up a group trip, and they'll plan activities for you.

Olympia - Hands-On Children's Museum. Offers half-price admission to homeschoolers every Tuesday. Also has a First Friday Free night from 5 to 9 pm every month.

Port Orchard - Sidney Art Gallery. Always free. A nice place to expose your children to fine art. The docents are happy to talk to them about it. Next door is the Log Cabin Museum, an interesting look back at South Kitsap's history.

Seattle - The Museum of Flight. First Thursday of the month from 5 to 9 pm.

Tacoma - Children's Museum of Tacoma. Every First Friday from 10-5 is admission-free. Suggested ages: preschool through 3rd grade.
Tacoma - Museum of Glass. Third Thursday 5 to 8pm. A bizarre and unique place that everyone will enjoy!
Tacoma - Washington State History Museum.Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm. We were pleasantly surprised here, as most of the displays are very hands-on and child-oriented.

Westport - Westport Maritime Museum. This lighthouse is a great place to take the children in summer. Every third Saturday is free from 1:00 - 2:30 pm for elementary school children. They have crafts, tours, and activities that are free during that time period.

Do you know of other free admissions in the area? Please email us with the information. Thanks!

Reciprocal Agreements
Number one way to save money! The Association of Science and Technology Centers has such an agreement among its members. If you buy an annual membership at one, you get free admission to the others. Last year, when we were in Portland, my mom bought us an annual pass to OMSI. $60 for a Family Traveler pass (because we're more than 120 miles away) LESS her $15 senior discount (note: there is a $5 homeschool discount for those without seniors).. For a YEAR, for six of us (2 adults and all minor children). One day admission was $46. We had a great day at OMSI, came back for two hours the next day, and haven't been to Portland since. We have, however, used it at Science World in Vancouver, and Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Well worth the $45. If you're not headed to Portland, you can get the PacSci membership for $75 less a $10 homeschool discount. If you're going to do this, fork over the extra $25 and make it Gold so you can take 5 friends each time.

Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma's reciprocal agreement is not quite as good, but still worthwhile if you're visiting. 50% off the Portland Zoo, Wildlife Safari in Oregon, or Northwest Trek. Not as good as free, but better than full price. Family membership for the zoo and aquarium is $59 for basic, $80 for deluxe (3 guests each time). For $150, you can upgrade to a sponsorship which gets you into the behind-the-scenes tours and special events. If you can afford it, this is well worth it.

Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle has full reciprocal benefits with the Portland Zoo. Family membership is $90.

PS While the information was current when posted, call first to make certain it still applies!
