KITSAP HOMESCHOOL CHESS CLUB

Every week, two dozen warriors meet in fierce battles to the finish, the pawns of war sacrificed for the greater good. But there is no blood here, no shouts of triumphant victory -- only the shaking of hands, and a heartfelt, "Good game." This is the Kitsap Homeschool Chess Club. Young ladies and young gentlemen from 6 to 18 compete in weekly tournaments under the watchful eye and coaching of "Mr. Will." There is no coddling here, no taking it easier on the less experienced players. Only straightforward instruction, critique, and practice. The practice that makes perfect.
Since its inception, KHS players have consistently placed in the top ten in the state, competing against clubs and schools with five times its numbers. Undoubtedly, the children are similar to every other. It is the style that differs. Encouragement without flattery. Development of strength, and the eradication of weakness. And the reminder that everyone is beatable.
Check their website for availability.  Children must have a basic understanding of the game, a commitment to show up to the weekly meetings, and the maturity to win and lose gracefully.
